I couldn't find a topic like this, so I'm not sure if there's a lot of interest in it. But since one of the biggest reasons for my coming here is to discover new music, I think we ought to have a topic dedicated to recommending the latest and greatest music to have just been released. We have staff picks and great reviews already, but a lot of stuff goes under the radar. So share your exciting new discoveries or the comebacks of old favorites with the rest of us here.
I guess it's nice to start this from the beginning of the year, but you can of course recommend some 2010 albums you think were overlooked, too.
My recommendations that haven't already been covered by MS reviews are, so far:
Crowbar - Sever The Wicked Hand: Kirk got sober and found Jesus. Good for him, I guess. It doesn't show in the music, which is as thick, sludgy and melancholy as ever before. Another solid addition to an incredibly consistent discography, if not quite their strongest effort.
DoomSword - The Eternal Battle: I've been pretty unfamiliar with DoomSword for a long time even if I've known about them and heard a song here and there. That's still the case. From what I can tell, though, The Eternal Battle is not quite as doomy and epic as their first albums but rather leans towards traditional heavy metal with the faster riffs and stuff. Pretty impressive nonetheless, there's something authentic and endearing about the band. (Couldn't find a sample, sorry.)
Weedeater - Jason... The Dragon: The sludge/stoner act Weedeater buzzes and crushes away with a deep, heavy sound that really appeals to me. When they're loud, they're tight. There's some strange filler and interludes on this album that don't really fit in, though.
Orchid - Capricorn: Orchid have released a lauded EP already, but Capricorn is their first full-length. They play groovy old school Sabbath worship. It's not new, but why should it be when it's this good?
Great doom album (with traditional, apparently female, vocals) from UK doomsters (I love that word) The Wounded Kings. Huge epic riffs and brilliant sound. Nothing new but still worth listening to:
^ I'd seen name/album cover but never bothered checking them out. But wow, that's really nice. Gotta get into it.
Same with The Flight Of Sleipnir. I finally checked them out, and damn. They're good. Kind of a doom/folk metal mix. I'm not a big fan of the uncharismatic shrieks, the clean vocals work much better.
By far and away one of the most bizarre and offbeat black metal bands ever. Listening to the album now and I think I love it, batty as hell style but extremely listenable once you get into it. Thanks to Mikyz for this one.

Awesome recommendation, The Wounded Kings kick ass! For another all-out Doom record, check out The Gates of Slumber's newest album The Wretch!
The song is ok. I don't find anything amazing about it. Sounds like Nevermore with growls, even the soloing is reminiscent of Loomis.
Now that you mention it it does remind me of Nevermore, guess that's why it I like it so much. Sounds like Nevermore with little bits of tech-death thrown in.
Excellent sludge with industrial influences, very nasty. You can listen to the full album at their bandcamp http://beneathoblivion.bandcamp.com/ and if you want to support the band you can buy the CD/2LP from the label.
Sounds like a pretty bad parody, I'm afraid. :\
Plus, I hate hippies. (a band called Botanist is bound to be composed of hippies/a hippie).
Well it's more of a fictional entity I believe. Taken from the website:
Quote: The following are explanations of terms used in the growing lexicon of the Botanist universe.
Azalea: Whether a demon of the plantae underworld, the vengeful spirit of Nature, or merely an embodiment of schizophrenia, Azalea is the voice in The Botanist's head, instructing him on how to bring about the fall of Humanity.
Budding Dawn, The: At the end of the world, at the apocalypse of man, when people either kill themselves or each other off, The Budding Dawn will come to pass.
Chlorophyllic Continuum, The: The great collective that unites all floral essences throughout. A sort of astral plane of plants.
Mandrake Legion, The: An army of Mandragoras brought to life through ancient alchemical cult practice. Azalea commands The Botanist to create this shrieking horde of death in order to wipe the earth clean of Humanity.
Veltheim Throne: The cathedra upon which The Botanist awaits the extinction of Humanity. It is constructed of tightly tangled Veltheimia.
Verdant Realm, The: The space, both physical and conceptual, in which The Botanist lives.
Verdant Messiah: An entity shall rise to bring about the fall of Time and the Armageddon of Mankind. That entity will be known as the Verdant Messiah.
I wouldn't say it's a parody either, there's nothing caricaturish about the band (aside from perhaps the vocals), it's just black metal played on a hammered dulcimer rather than a guitar. You should listen to one of the albums and regard it as a whole. It's very cohesive and once you get round the fact there are no guitars it's no more absurd than it would be if it had been played on guitar. It's just because that's what you're used to. From a total musical perspective it's quite effective and pleasant to listen to.
Ya, Skogen came out with a new album, Svitjod. It's been out for a while but hasn't seemed like it's been picked up. Good quality, old Drudkh-ish black metal.
also, the New York band, Hull just released a really great album called, Beyond the Lightless Sky. Very creative Post-sludge like metal. Damn shame, there are no songs I could find online.

No problem. Awesome album too...better than the debut imo.
I haven't heard their debut but from what I'm seeing, u rite, u rite. Here's another one and many many more potentially, there are too many great releases this year.
Pagan, Epic, Black metal, Darkestrah from Germany. Their new EP Khagan.
Written by Misfit74 on 31.10.2011 at 22:02 Krisiun's new one,The Great Execution is out of this world. Like, goosebumps type shit. Wow.
I was honestly incredibly surprised how much I liked it. I had it set at an 8/10 with just the single, and I didn't even have to change my rating once I heard the entire thing. One of my favorite Krisiun albums, and I like...pretty much all of them.

Something about this album reminded me heavily of Agalloch's White EP. Might be the tree on the cover or the atmosphere... I haven't quite decided. Whatever the case, this is an awesome album/song.
