I couldn't find a topic like this, so I'm not sure if there's a lot of interest in it. But since one of the biggest reasons for my coming here is to discover new music, I think we ought to have a topic dedicated to recommending the latest and greatest music to have just been released. We have staff picks and great reviews already, but a lot of stuff goes under the radar. So share your exciting new discoveries or the comebacks of old favorites with the rest of us here.

I guess it's nice to start this from the beginning of the year, but you can of course recommend some 2010 albums you think were overlooked, too.

My recommendations that haven't already been covered by MS reviews are, so far:

Crowbar - Sever The Wicked Hand: Kirk got sober and found Jesus. Good for him, I guess. It doesn't show in the music, which is as thick, sludgy and melancholy as ever before. Another solid addition to an incredibly consistent discography, if not quite their strongest effort.

DoomSword - The Eternal Battle: I've been pretty unfamiliar with DoomSword for a long time even if I've known about them and heard a song here and there. That's still the case. From what I can tell, though, The Eternal Battle is not quite as doomy and epic as their first albums but rather leans towards traditional heavy metal with the faster riffs and stuff. Pretty impressive nonetheless, there's something authentic and endearing about the band. (Couldn't find a sample, sorry.)

Weedeater - Jason... The Dragon: The sludge/stoner act Weedeater buzzes and crushes away with a deep, heavy sound that really appeals to me. When they're loud, they're tight. There's some strange filler and interludes on this album that don't really fit in, though.

Orchid - Capricorn: Orchid have released a lauded EP already, but Capricorn is their first full-length. They play groovy old school Sabbath worship. It's not new, but why should it be when it's this good?

Couple of releases from the immense Barn Owl this year, an EP and a full length. Both in a similar vein. Both exceptional. Here's one of the "dronier" tracks of the full length, extremely Sunn O)))-esque.

Oooh right. I'd forgotten all about those releases. I heard Shadowland once when it came out, but never went back to it later. I knew they also had a full-length out, but I missed it altogether. I keep list of the current year's most interesting new albums, and I'm at about 200 albums right now, so Barn Owl got kinda buried under a pile of ambient and drone.

But I notice both albums are now on Spotify. Listening to the LP atm, sounds quite great. The track you posted is probably my least favorite so far, though.

Edit: Shadowland is better than I remembered. These repetitive first two tracks are gorgeous. Last tack is a bit meh.

Yeah I went for the most metal track for the sake of the site I haven't really listened to individual songs, just the album as a whole. It's hard to keep an eye on what song is playing with stuff like this as it flows together very nicely.

Rather nice tech/prog death with an interesting and bludgeoning sound:

Acroos Tundras' "Sage" is my favourite album so far this year, and it seems to be out of everyone's radar. I love this band's country-esque approach to stoner doom, I follow them since their debut ep back in 2005 and everything they had made since then is great, but just now with "Sage" they achieved flawlessness to these humble ears.

If you like doom in any shape or form this album from the US band "Loss" is really worth your time:

And you can vote for them over yonder: http://www.metalstorm.net/bands/band_suggestions.php?suggested_search=loss+%28USA%29

Invisible profile of the band now available. So go ahead and submit the needed data.

Btw, this track isn't totally representative of the album due to the clean guest vocals by Pallbearer's vocalist.

Btw, up to now my favourite extreme doom album of the year.

And if you really enjoy this album I urge you to check out your coutnrymen Mournful Congregation, if you haven't yet. Loss operates along the same lines they do.

I wouldn't compare Loss with Mournful Congregation... both are excelent bands, but when MC are extremely subtle and somehow reflexive, Loss are pretty visceral by their side. Different approaches to extreme doom if you ask me.

btw, had you listened to Loss' side band Mourner? I'm dying for checking it, although it seems to be pretty difficult to find even for downloading.

New 'Giant Squid' album titled 'Cenotes':

didn't see it coming, a new by Giant Squid... I'll try to check it, since Metridium Fields was pretty decent and The Icthiologyst was excellent!

It caught me by surprise too, only found out about it a few days ago. I've only heard The Icthiologyst, which was a really difficult album for me to get into at first, but this new one is sounding like an improvement I think.

Doesn't happen all that often but here is some Black metal which I'm enjoying from a one man band by the name of 'Fyrnask':

A band I've been aware of on a subconscious level for ages but never checked out until just now. New album is quite something. Loosely speaking this is black metal but there's an intriguing vibe running through this that seems almost unique to this band:

For fans of Melechesh I would imagine.

Thanks for the Giant Squid heads up. It's now streaming on NPR First Listen.

I was browsing my 2011 playlist which includes pretty much everything I've come across on Spotify, and discovered this gem of an album I'd forgotten to add to my lists of interesting stuff. Have to rectify that immediately. It's some kind of industrial/drone with some metal feel to it.

Been playing this quite a lot the last few days. I love it. Rwake play sludge with a hardcore edge, quite like the atmospheric sludge style that's prevalent these days, but with a much more aggressive and energetic take at it. I love how heavy simplicity and technical furiousness alternate in the music.

I guess you mean Dekpitator. But that one is already about two years old. So, as for a 2011 recommendation...

Fo' realz?
Quite possibly the best thing that ever came out of America (the entire continent, not just the US). Other than maybe Xasthur. And definitely second to porn.
Listened to their new one again today, damn that's some fine stuff.

I'd add them to MS. Just sayin'...

Well they tend to go over toward that "wall-of-noise" kinda area which I find rather appealing but I'm guessing isn't your cup of cheese.

I like some noise/drone stoofs but it isn't my preference. When it's done like Corrupted I definitely appreciate it more.

Fascincating, heavy-yet-thoughtful and slightly offbeat (in the fact it's so oddly simplistic and direct) instrumental atmospheric sludge from Italy. This is quality shiz.

Thanks for Lento. I was looking forward to the album early this year, but it didn't appear on Spotify and I had so much other stuff to listen to that I gave it up and forgot about it. Seems to be available now though. I'll put it on asap, I really liked their debut.
