Ok, this is the video Thread. I have to admit I'm a visual person and I love good videos. I wanna know which are, for you guys, the best music videos and why. please give some information about the director...
one of my fav. directors is Michel Gondry. He have made amazing videos (and movies by the way)!Is a great artist, very unique. He have work with Björk, Foo Fighters, The White Stripes and a lot of other artist! This man have a very original way to make videos, I mean his videos are beautiful and powerful or weird, in other words. UNIQUE
Another is Howard Greenhalgh I fall in love with his videos when I buy a Placebo DVD. The video? Nacy Boy... Sexy!!!! but he have work with other artists like: System of a Down, Elton John, Soundgarden (my always beloved video Black hole sun), INXS and Iron Maiden (but I don't like the video Rainmaker)...
This is just a few one I like. I choose the directors but i will post some videos I like some day! now I want some opinions and recommendation!

First Du Riechst So Gut is one of my fav. video of Rammstein... this beautiful people dancing, the wolves, this man wearing a dress... oh i love it!
I already mentioned the video wasting love but I love the song too... is so sad and perfect!!!!
and of course my always beloved APOCALYPTICA!!! what can I say... I just love them. Path with the shadows and the enregy and the song (which is one of my fav. song too) and Hope vol 2 which is the sound track of Vidocq and is amazing...

Oh... this is amazing... I really love Placebo videos... Sensual... this one (Special Needs) is special because you see this couple making love and they are so far form each other but it doesn't matter at all. Do you know which is my fav. Placebo video?.... Is Taste in man. Molko looks hot and the whole story is great. This man in love, this woman... and Molko! oh is so good and the song is kind of good too. see it

Currently I gotta say Korn's Twisted Transistor. I especially love Snoop Dogg's statement in the end: ''This song isn't about no booty, it's about transistors!!!!'' And Lil Jon really did a great job in impersonating Jonathan, omg, that scene showing Jonathan as a mortician just cracks me up

I also love their video, which is a shot from a concert, for Another Brick In The Wall, because Jonathan is such a hottie in that leather kilt

Damnated: oh I love Ramastain videos too!! Mein Teil, Du Riechst So Gut, Engel...
Alastor Scourge: really good videos you mentioned there...
Reinhardt: oh dear... I'm so glad you like it... Is just so sexy... and the lyric of the song.. is on my mind righ now
PhoeNNix: I have to disagree with you in this, I hate that video. I don't know... They have some really good videos why did you choose 'Twisted Transistor'??? Ok I respect your opinion but I can't agree with you. This video is just kind of stupid (but not in the funny way) and the song... I don't like it neither.
But the one of Another Brick In The Wall is other thing... specially for Jonathan wearing leather kilt... oh men in skirts... lovely... sexy!!!

@Aloqua: no offense taken, we just have different opinions I on the other hand love the song.... I even love the title, I mean, ''Twisted Transistor'', at first I thought like wtf was that suppose to mean.... But I really love the whole song, melodically and lyrically, cause I couldn't agree more with the part ''A lonely life, when noone understands you, but don't give up, because the music do!'' And I love the video cause I really don't like rap and those guys playing Korn guys, whit the exception of Snoop, seem like a bunch of goofos to me But they did a GREAT job IMO in impersonating guys from the band, from painting their attitudes (Munkey's anger managment problems ) and their performance on stage (hell, if Lil Jon wasn't black, I'd think it's Jonathan). The guys were just making fun of themselves and I really admire that in a way actually, especially in the end when they're dicussiong the clicles of Korn videos and music.

And I agree on Rammstein/s videos, though my fave has to be Ich Will and I also really like the video for Sonne.

And I also must mention HIM's video for Wicked Game, it has no particular story, but it's really beautiful.

Ah, music videos...

Metal actually doesnt have particularly good music videos since they tend to either just show the band playing and juxtapose it with some random images, show a bunch of dark settings and images or just show the band playing live. The problem with these videos is of course that they dont make use of the music video visual language, which can be used to achieve phenomenal results. To prove my point, let me show you some really good music videos:

In the 80s, the music video was still in a primitive stage and there were very few videos that used visual language as a means of communication; however, here is one early example of a great music video -
Coil - "Tainted Love" - http://youtube.com/watch?v=eo3TUtRnZi4

The guy who directed this video, Peter Christopherson. later also directed my own personal favorite video -
Ministry - "NWO" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOeCpMwZo6o

By and large, before the alternative crossed over to the mainstream in the late 80s and early 90s, the music video form was fairly limited and unoriginal. Directors treated the music video as merely a form of promotion for the band and did not try to augment the meaning of the song with the video, instead opting for creating something that is simply eye candy. Only extremely big artists could at this time afford video clips that had more substance to them (David Bowie, Queen, Michael Jackson, Peter Gabriel). This all changed when grunge started to dominate MTV. This is partly because the bands themselves tried to be different than what came before them so they looked for directors willing to create a new visual language that would set them apart. Perhaps the most famous video from these days is -
Pearl Jam - "Jeremy" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMVVnBIYfdI

Also, here is another example of a grunge video -
Soundgarden - "Jesus Christ Pose" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lM3Zx1Pj2w

After this significant change in the perception of the music video as an art form, MTV started printing directors names on videoclips and the videoclip became an auteur genre. This is when some famous music video directors started to emerge.

One phenomenal such director is Mark Romanek. Here are some videos he directed:
Nine Inch Nails - "Closer" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q72mULwUdgw
Johnny Cash - "Hurt" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmVAWKfJ4Go

Another great music video director is Mike Nichols.
Aphex Twin - "Come To Daddy" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbL7ghNpGkc

Finally, here is a video I directed as an end of semester project in Film School -
Azerate - "World" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7fqBp7GmC8

My favorite videos have to be Ministry's Just One Fix and NWO.
Ministry has some pretty great videos, but the one for Bad Blood is pretty bad, after I saw it I never heard the song againd and always skipped it. Fruit Punch and Gatorade flying everywhere...ugh.

But I like watching corny metal videos alot, they're really funny.
Check out Motorhead's Killed By Death

I've never luaghed so hard at metal in my life.

Also Nanowar's True Metal of Steel is a great parody of videos like that.

Mostly I just really like videos that are so bad they're hilariously entertaining.

I was wondering if anyone can help me with a music video. I have no idea what band it was, but I just remember loving the song and music video. All I can do is explain it. It was a sort of animation, whether clay or something else I don't remember, but it was about these little grey people who live in a black and white world. The video follows one of them to his job in a factory where they produce these glasses that make the world colorful. He is very sad and puts them on and becomes all happy then takes them off and sees how sad his world is again.

Sorry I can't explain it any better. It's been probably five years since I've seen it. I am thinking it might have been by Tool or NIN but I just don't know. I just remember seeing it a bunch on MTV then never again. Anyone know?

I must thank Krypton for posting those Katie Melua videos, I would have missed some great videos otherwise. And I must also thank Reinhardt for making me remember the awsome Apocalyptica video path, but I would like to make an edition to your Apocaliptica list: the cover song nothing else matters. The video is kind of simple, but get beautiful in a way.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZSO59yTSW-I&search=apocalyptica-%20nothing%20else%20matters

There are some great metal videos out there:

Soul Takers - Tide: Seems simple at first, filming the band members and some nature scenes. But it shouldn't be more, beacuse then the atmosphere is gone. http://www.soultakers.net/video.htm

Sentenced - No one there: Sentenced has allways come up with some great videos but this one top them all. So beautiful and sad in a way. http://youtube.com/watch?v=RxiUn4ihOVQ&search=sentenced%20no%20one%20there

Tristania - Heritique: A good video to a kick ass song. I like the chaos thas is reprented in the video.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=67thegboP10&search=tristania%20Heretique

Queensryche - Eyes of a stranger: The video that represent the masterpiece Opration mindcrime. You really got an idea of a story here, without taking it to far.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=FXSdLnHr_80&search=queensryche%20eyes%20of

Trans siberian Orchestra - Requeim The fifth: The way these guys are presenting Beethoven 5th requeim is simply astoning. I love the sensuality in it, quite a difference from those exploited RnB videos.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBM7fMiZo4M&search=trans%20requiem

And then we have some non-metal videos:

Pink Floyd - The wall: A classic music video with a great message hidden in it.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=wT5wIbvoCew&search=the%20wall

Muse - Bliss: I love this the video! It gives you a sense of freedom in my opinion.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=0EWQAID_dfs&search=muse%20bliss

Laleh - Live Tomorrow: This video is so serene, and very beautiful. It's simple but get wierd. In my opinion, it's a peice of art. http://youtube.com/watch?v=wOTKwbGBvHs&search=laleh

Great topic, btw!

- Rammstein - Sonne: The whole twisted gold-addicted snow white tale is great.
- Children Of Bodom - Needle 24/7: The only circus I like.
- The Offspring - Want You Bad: It's fuckin hilarious!
- Incubus - Wish you Were Here: Great mixture of home footage with studio filming
- Lacuna Coil - Our Truth: I don't know, I just like it.
- Lacuna Coil - Heaven's a Lie: Cool FX, and the clothing changes of Christina are pretty cool.
- Lacuna Coil - Swamped:It has a lot of energy, the band headbanging and the scenery is awesome.
