Well, I've been looking in the forum, but I couldn't find a topic like this one. Now that I finally got my 100 posts, I can create it . (Hope it wont be locked or deleted though).

I'd like to know when you guys have started to like metal. I think it reveals many things about people's personality, as in my opinion, Metal is not a kind of music you can listen to "by chance". I think there is a kind of... evolution, which eventually makes you listen to this music.

Personally, I started being into Metal only 3 years ago, in 2003, (which is kinda late,) thanks to Rammstein, I was about 14, but even then, I was more into Industrial and Rock. Even if I've been raised with a big brother who used to listen to classic Metal bands such as Iron Maiden and Metallica for instance, I've never thought I would regard myself as a "metalhead" one day.

I guess I wasn't mature enough to understand what Metal could really mean. But we all grow up. I've never really had a "happy" life, and I found in Metal things that helped me much. There were feelings I couldn't name, and Metal enabled me to understand more things about my own life and about people in general.
I think I wouldn't have started listening to this kind of music if I wasn't forced to leave the place I had been living in for years, for the second time. That special event, when I had to move and leave everything behind, made me start listening to Metal. And now i know i cant live without it.

Its your turn now , I'd like to know how and when you started listening to Metal. It might be really interesting I think, and I'm sure there is a lot to say .

Do you class Rob Zombie, Coal Chamber and Korn as metal?? In that case, I was 9.

If not, Slipknot, Drowning Pool and Slayer at 13. Are probally the first semi-metal bands I was into (Not Slayer)

very early 80's... in '82 Judas Priest's "You've got another thing coming" was the first video I ever saw on MTV. My brother and I liked the song, but were like, "WHOAAA!!!!" when the dude explodes at the end.

Around that time, my 4th grade class was being held in a high school, thanks to overcrowding, and we all got exposed to what the high schoolers at the time.

By 1983-4 it was Iron Maiden.

Later 80's got into Metallica, Megadeth (via Peace Sells), and Anthrax (via the "I'm the Man" e.p.)

Joined the Navy and got into death metal in 1991 after reading an article in Spin magazine and finding a promo copy cassette of Napalm Death's "Harmony Corruption" at the base exchange. When I was stationed in Guam, for some reason that I am sure NO ONE knows, the Air Force Base Exchange carried all the classic albums that Earache released. Godflesh, Entombed, Bolt Thrower, Napalm Death, Cathedral...

weeee

now you know, and that's half the battle.

The first time I listened to metal was along long way back when i was about 11 or 12 years old!! I was visiting some of my relatives. They had a big apartment in a nice district! I was the youngest person that evening! I got soooo bored, so, i decided to go out and descover the nieghberhood.. I took off and wallked alil bit infront of the house.. Suddenly, i saw something brown under the tree, it was square-shaped little box!
I took a look at it, it was a CD box.. for some people called Metallica! wut the hell is this! i said... then I opened the box .. it was a double CD .. then I descovered that it was a music CD... I wnt to house again to find out wut is this cd all bout!

I played the album... It is a cocert for metallica called "garage nights" , I was shocked by the music! IT WAS AMAZING!!!

After that. acouple of years later, i found what really Metallica represents.. and what is metal!!!

The album contained many old songs for metallcia, and i think that it was released before 1988 coz the song "one" is declared in the concert as a new song in a the next album! It aslo contained some covers performed by metallcai for iron maiden "Run to the hills" and black sabbath " Sabbath Bloddy Sabbat, and Symptoms of the universe"..

This album introduced me to metal !!! I still own the album! and will never ever lose it someday! Actually, I put it inside a glass box in my room!

Hail METAL...

Started listening to metal when I was about 11, I happened to flick across TV channels and disccovered Kerrang, back in the days when it was decent, at first I got into heavy metal Motorhead and the like, my eldest brother is heavily into Iron Maiden and gave me some CDs, and at least I have the marbles to admit that I was once into Cradle of Fluff.
When I got the internet I researched into more heavier forms of metal and if it wasn't for that I wouldn't have had a more varied taste of metal genres and been into the bands I'm into today.

Enter the story of my stepdad and his collection of classic Iron Maiden records. I literally locked myself in my room listening to everything up to Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son. Well, it's better than the birthday of my most hated aunt that my mom tried to force me into going to, eh?

Mmh, wow. That's only some 4-5 years ago...

I started listening metal when I was 12. Metallica, Iron Maiden, Korn were my first favourite bands. I discovered great broadcast in polish radio called "rock radio". While listening it I discovered a lot of rock & metal bands. I've been listening death metal for 6 years, in those days my friend lent me a few Vader and Behemoth CD's. That's how all has begun. Now I can't imagine my life without metal.

The first metal song that I really started to like was Rammstein - Du riechst So Gut when I saw the video (probably in 1998/99). An active metal listening period started in 2003 when I started listening to Helloween, Children of Bodom, Nightwish and various other mostly known metal bands.

I was around 8 or 9 when I was into Metallica and Black Sabbath, but never checked out Metal as a whole. In early 2006 is when I did. Started out with bands like Carcass, At the Gates, In Flames, etc and went from there. I never looked back.

I find it odd that you say that being a noob constitutes liking Thrash and Melodic Death Metal, which the majority of metalheads on this site would most likely appreciate either one or both. So, despite liking metal since I was 8, that makes me a noob, if I apparently appreciate both of those subgenres and have done for years?

Unless of course you were referring to your limited knowledge of metal, as we all had when we first got into metal

In 1998, I began to appreciate rock music with the Offspring's album called "Americana".
Then, I started to listen to metal with bands like Slipknot or Rammstein.

And after, in 2005, I sank into doom metal with My Dying Bride: THE revelation.

My first metal experience was Metallica, which was when I was 14 or 15, and I became pretty obsessed with them for a while. Then I got into Slayer, and from there I dove right into death metal, Dying Fetus and Decapitated being the main bands I listened to for a while. It just evolved from there into harder stuff. now almost 5 years later I'm obsessed with bands like Aborted, Pig Destroyer, Gorerotted, etc.. Although Dying Fetus is still one of my top favorite DM bands of all time.

Nothing better than listening to metal on stolen tapes

When I was pretty young I find out how to enter into neighbour's basement, well, O sneak through the window and found some paper box full of tapes, Sepultura, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Possessed...

I stole them all, but after some time he found out and forced me to return all tapes I took, anyway, he let me record them on my tapes

I am probably considered to be one of the older people on this forum - but still very proud to be listening to metal and the old age of 37.

It all started for me when I was 6 years old. I went over my cousins hose (i can still remember the day like it was yesterday!) who played drums - he put Xanadu from Rush's masterpiece A Farewell to Kings and played drums along with it. It was at that moment, I knew that I wanted to play drums in a rock band. Rush was like my gateway drug - i just kept craving more and more hard rock music. I was captivated by the musicianship that went into hard rock (not reallt a whole lot of "metal" at that time). As I got older, i just kept getting into more and more different types of metal. To this day, I still enjoy it more than anything. Even though i'm "grown up" now and have a career and a wife etc, I will always listen to metal. Its actually kind of funny - working in corporate America, all my co-workers think I'm crazy and "dark" because I'm still so into it. I laugh at them because they are listening to BS thats forced down their throats by FM radio and don't know how to think for themselves. So, thats my story.....

My whole life I had listened to classic and progressive rock. Even as a young child I was an elitist in music of this sort. It was like nothing could ever compare. One day when I was about 12 years old my sister showed me this video on her computer. All I saw were these guys with long hair and they were screaming. I couldn't even tell if it was English or not..I really didn't care though. I was put into some sort of trance when I was watching this..it was the most amazing melody I had ever heard in my life. I couldn't stop staring at the screen. I had really never seen or heard anything so beautiful in my life..I found out it was Children of Bodom singing Follow the Reaper live. So as my sister was exploring metal I really couldn't admit to liking it. I thought it was such a far departure from everything I had ever listened to. I was embarrassed to tell her I liked it. I would secretly listen to her CDs and research the bands. I started getting captivated by Iron Maiden, Rhapsody, Ayreon, Kalmah, Candlemass..I really didn't know what to do with myself. Finally I realized that I could listen to metal and listen to everything I had before. I came to peace with it. I think being a part of this subculture is one of the best things in my life. I think that I never would have met some of the people I have met if I had never been into metal. I fell in love with this lifestyle and not just the music. I have realized that metal is like a family heirloom or something..we pass it down to our metal brothers and sisters. That is how I found out about it and I am so glad I did. My sister and I are so close from it. I just became infatuated with metal and how many subgenres there were and how endless it was. Anyways I'm rambling so I think I'll stop.

I started to listen Metal when I was 12 years old. I started with Metallica and Iron Maiden.

But it was only some years after that I was a metal addicted. for me Blind Guradian was a sort of revelation and make me crazy about metal. And month after month, I listened melo death, then pure death and black metal, I started slowly and finish brutal.

Now my musical universe is 90% of metal and 10% of orchestral classic music. And it's now impossible one day without hear metal even I was at work (hehe, cool to have own office ).

The most important thing with metal music for me still all those different sub-style you can find on it.

This is probably so lame, But I was watching TV one day when I was 12, And I flipped thru the digital music channels, I stopped on the metal one, All I hear is "ON AND ON SOUTH OF HEAVEN!" So I listened on.. I liked what I had heard, So I just kept listening to the channel every day after school.

Eventually, when I got a job, I started to buy Albums, And it's been the same ever since then.,
