I tried giving Formulas Fatal to the Flesh another chance and am glad that I did (so it looks like I take back my comments on post-Domination Morbid Angel). It is less catchy than their previous albums, but in many ways, I would consider it their most ambitious album and a next step in the maturation of their music. I remember reading a review saying that Domination was quite regimented and very defined whereas FFttF was more organic, and I think that is very true.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm ready to get some new Morbid Angel. Listening up on their latest albums, and a bit from the David Vincent era makes me itch for some more Death Metal the Elder Gods would be proud of.

yeah, i'm beginning to grow anxious as well. Per a message on their official site dated last month, they are taking a break from writing and pre-production, as well as doing some festivals and gigs over the summer. Before that blurb in March, they went a full calendar year and change without anything.

I still remember the interview last year with a happy Trey, saying that he's not angry anymore like he used to be and how he just wants to focus on the positive aspects of life. Hopefully his daughter dies or something so that Morbid Angel will be aggressive again.

no but seriously, i don't care if morbid angel bring a new album out or not, like many other giants from the past, this band is DEAD. but, i'm glad that i will see these guys finally live this summer, hope they don't cancle their tour or something..

I'm guessing so. He was the only recording guitarist on 'Heretic' except for a solo by Karl Sanders on "God of Our Own Divinity." Eric Rutan was the last co-guitarist IIRC on 'Domination' through 'Gateways...' I think it'd be cool if they brought Richard Brunelle back. I wonder what he's doing these days? ("He's probably getting fucked in the ass!" - For all you Tourettes Guy lovers out there.)

I'm trying to remember...when I saw them in 2006 on Dave's reunion tour, I think they only had Trey on guitar, but I could be wrong. I'm just glad that Dave doesn't look like this anymore:

I don't really like his novadays' vocals either, nothing like they used to be in the first two albums. First time I heard Domination I thought that the change in the vocal style was pretty good, alas, listening to the whole album changed my mind.

Amazing how they make all songs sound great live ! I only like Altars of Madness but they made me enjoy all their set at Hellfest!

Care to post the setlist? Seeing them over here this weekend.

They played a new song at Hellfest. I don't know how it compares with latest albums since I don't really know their recent discography, but it sounded really great! But then again, as ylside said, their whole set sounded extremely good, one of the best shows of the festival.

About the setlist, I don't remember everything, but they sure played the following (in no particular order):
Maze Of Torment
Lord Of All Fevers And Plague
Chapel Of Ghouls
Sworn To The Black
God Of Emptiness
Immortal Rites
and I think Blessed Are The Sick
+ the new song whose title I don't remember.

You don't like MA?!?! jk...my personal favorites are Blood on my hands, Angel of Disease, Chapel of Ghouls, Prayer of Hatred, Invocation of the Continual One, Maze of Torment, Inquisition, and Hatework. But, there are some good songs that I didn't mention in the post right above you.

I'm itching bad for a new Morbid Angel album. I like all their shit, so I'm confident it'll be good. Hopefully there will be less tracks on the new one though - Heretic having 14 is a bit much.

Has anyone seen their performance on Graspop? Some of my friends told me that their sound was terrible. They're still one of my favorite death metal bands.

To be honest, the overall sound on Graspop was pretty mediocre actually, and sometimes indeed quite terrible... I was there on Sunday only, so I couldn't catch Morbid Angel live, but on HellFest they were really really good.

Yep!! At Hellfest they were just fantastic. I had wanted to see them live for a long time!

Concerning the guy up there that says he isn't into Morbid Angel.. it actually took me a while to realise what was so good about them.. at first they just seemed like a mediocre death metal band that people just liked for the sake of liking.. but I don't know.. maybe you just need to get used to them or something. Gain an appreciation for death metal in general and its history..
Whatever, Morbid Angel both old and new I love..

I think the problem with Heretic is not the number of tracks...FFttF also had 14, but that there is way too much in the way of atmospheric filler. At least FFttF kept the atmospherics relatively short, but these are like full length songs. I think that Heretic is over 1 hour long (excluding the bonus disc), but there are only 36 minutes of actual songs. Nonetheless, 6 of the 8 songs are excellent and I would consider this album as highly underrated. I really enjoy the production on this album as well...it is more raw than on the previous albums, but everything can be heard.
