Most Talented Vocalists In Metal

My other lists:
Tasty Stuff Not Currently Featured On MS
So I Heard You Like Opeth...

A concise list of my metalhead man-crushes (now featuring ladies.)

While there is little introduction required for some of these bands and their front(wo)men, there are no words that can accurately describe such jaw-dropping talent anyhow. The albums and youtube links listed are meant to display the full capacity of vocalists' talents, not the bands' most quality or popular tracks - click the links below and behold the prowess.

Many tears will be shed on your behalf if your favourite vocalist isn't here. That being said, any suggestions are more than welcome. A star (★) indicates that the vocalist is exceptionally versatile. If you believe that a certain vocalist deserves a (currently unaccredited) star, then post a few YouTube tracks to support your case.

Avoided criteria:
- Consistency with live performances
- Emotional delivery
- Ability to write aurally appealing vocal lines
- Ability to compliment the music

i.e. The style performances are judged solely on technical ability.

Here are the tracks I've allocated to the vocalists so far in the order of the list below. If you have suggestion which better showcases any vocalist's talents or if any of the link aren't working, please let me know.

Yes, it was him, alongside Vintersorg.

So Vintersorg does cleans also? If so, could you let me know which part of any song on Urd features him performing those?

Yes. Cleans have been split between the two of them, since Vortex's return to the band. The opening track, "Epochalypse" features both of them, I believe.

Hey, I know you've already put down Annlouice from Diablo Swing Orchestra, but have you ever considered putting Daniel Håkansson up there too?
For me, he is one of the most underrated vocalists in music, simply because he's overshadowed by DSO's other tremendous vocal talent. Just listen to Justice For Saint Mary if you haven't already to see what I mean

Attila should definitely be on this list in my opinion, he's one of those rare vocalists that has a strange way of blending his extreme vocals together with his cleans, such as on this Mayhem track. But he also has the distinction of being able to adapt his voice to virtually any style, and his deep cleans are simply beautiful when he lets them out at their full potential, like with this Sunn O))) track he was featured on.

...Or Bobby Blitz of Overkill and Jon Oliva of Savatage.

I discovered Savatage about 2 weeks ago and I couldn't get over how amazing the vocalist was - brilliant song you recommended. Thanks for reminding me! I'll check out Overkill now

Good to see you finally added Aaron and even linked The Prize of Beauty to his name, which is from their 2nd best album (SoD, WoL). After many months you finally got my +1.

I'd say keep adding more non-progressive vocalists, for obvious reasons. Everyone already knows you're a prog-lover.

To be honest there are still quite a few great vocalists lacking this list. From the pending suggestions: vocalists from Isole, Lake of Tears, Yearning, Kamelot (Roy Khan), The Gathering (Anneke van Giersbergen) and Novembers Doom. If you need track suggestions for those, let me know.

I know it's a pain to make all those links clickable, but it's even more of a pain to others who want to check 'em out when they aren't clickable. Just saying...

All you have to do is copy/paste the link. Takes two seconds.

I don't even have to do that. Simply highlight the link, right click -> open.

Ya, I use Chrome and it has a "Go to [link]" feature that works the same way. It's actually easier for me to do it that way than it is for you to [tag] [/everything]

But it's still annoying. You also have to open a new window, which isn't necessary if the link is clickable.

Yes, but not everyone can do that. I sure as hell can't. In your case it's indeed easy.

And after reading the stuff at the top... come on. Pantera's vid for Cemetery Gates should be all the evidence Anselmo needs... (or maybe not, if that used an edit that clipped out the outro 615-7:00) then there's Shattered from the same 1990 album (no video), tracks 7-9 from TGSTkill (96) and perhaps his new project's album (haven't heard it, though)

Vektor: "Hunger for Violence" / "Destroying the Cosmos"
Judas Priest: "Beyond the Realms of Death" / "Victim of Changes" / "Painkiller" / "Nostradamus"
I might also suggest Peter Steele of Type O Negative - I think if you click into the band's Myspace or Videos you can access half of their last album
Anacrusis' Kenn Nardi was pretty wild / versatile (at least back in the demo days)
something else I think I agree on with Bad English: "Irmão" by Luminaria
...the following I've grabbed from what I posted on Frit's list of inspiring / impressive females... special mention to Marcela Bovio (Elfonía's song Mañana) & Julie Kiss (To-Mera - "Born of Ashes" wherever you can find it, it's so damn worth it )

Beyon-D-Lusion http://www.metalstorm.net/bands/band.php?band_id=1134
SpiRitual (Videos, "Pulse")
Sigh (the saxophone doctor - sorry, I'm not sure of the regularity of her vocals (actually that could go for most of these))
Boris (I would presume not the unique talent you're seeking, but what do I know? (I've never listened to them))
Melandrolia
Luna Mortis
Dylath-Leen
Coram Lethe (Splendid Chaos)
also search "musicians" at the drop-down box at top-right of page, you may know of them already, but: 2 musicians Borgia and Bovio

Syk has the tendency to drive people insane with his insane amount of suggestions. For my debut list, he suggested a total of 80 albums.

But the great thing is that he at least makes all his suggestions clickable.

Maybe it is simply your personal taste, but I don't see a whole lot of power metal up there. I know power metal vocalists often have the same sounding high pitched vocals, but for me, the best was always Fabio Lione of Rhapsody. You can hear the amazing range of timbre and style he is capable of by listening to Rhapsody songs, especially their cover of Manowar's "Power Of Thy Sword", and his latest album with Vision Divine.

It's funny you say that, I was just listening to quite a lot of power metal lately and was planning to add quite a few vocalists in the genre. Wait around, they'll be here soon
